From that moment on it seemed that he wanted to personally thank every person he met for saving his life.” Dewey went to every staff person and purred at them, wanting to be held. The pads on all four paws were frostbitten and over the next week they turned white and peeled off. “I put him down on the table,” says Vicki. The water turned grey – and a handsome, long-haired ginger male emerged. Vicki and her staff gave the icy kitten a bath to warm it up. “I knew we were going to be friends forever – and I knew he was the right cat for the library.” “As I picked him out of the book drop and looked into his eyes, I knew he wasn’t just a cat,” says Vicki, who grew up on a farm. Thinking it was a chipmunk, she opened the lid – and found a filthy, shivering kitten inside. The night before, the temperature had reached minus 15 and when Vicki opened the drop-off box she heard a strange sound. It was January 18, 1988, and bitterly cold in Spencer, a small town in Iowa in America’s mid West.
